Our experiences with meeting the farmer were very interesting. We were able to jot down some ideas in our books.

Then we summarised these notes through a news article we wrote for English. Here is mine.

Matto Kids Cotton On To Liz

Liz Lobsey , agronomist presented a lecture about cotton farming to the year 8 students at Matraville Sports High School on Wednesday 14th  , August ,2013.She gave the students vital information to help them with their Archibull Project.

In Liz’s presentation she taught the students many things such as the steps of growing cotton in different environments and conditions. One of the first steps is preparing the soil for planting, Then planting the seeds and waiting for the small cotton bushes to emerge but before it can grow anymore you have to irrigate the plant (Water The Plant).

After those processes they must wait for the cotton flower to emerge, then once they do, the cotton flower must have to die. They usually use a pesticide or a crop duster to kill the flowers and help the cotton buds to emerge. Then the farmers wait 2-3 weeks for the cotton to emerge from the cotton bud/ball.

But it isn’t finished there. After the growing it is sent to a cotton gin and all the grass, sticks and any other unwanted things are taken out of the cotton. Then the cotton is woven into cotton string and exported to manufactures all over the world.

This is how cotton is grown not just in Australia but ALL over the world.
